About the Event
Thermowall is a technical competition designed to test students’ understanding of thermal conductivity. Participants will prepare a wall of specified dimensions using either a single material or a composite material. The wall will be tested in a closed chamber under a thermal load to determine its heat resistance. Awards will be given to participants whose walls achieve the lowest temperature difference.
Event Rules
- Each team must prepare one thermal wall.
- The maximum wall dimensions shall be 300 mm × 300 mm × 10 mm.
- The wall must be structurally stable and safe to handle.
- A maximum of 3 material layers are permitted.
- Composite materials are allowed.
- All materials used must be declared during registration/design submission.
Permitted Materials: Teams may use commonly available materials such as:
- Wood
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Foam
- Thermocol
- Rubber
- Plastic
- Fabric
- Natural fibres
- Insulation materials
- Composite combinations
Note: The organizers reserve the right to reject any material that may damage the testing equipment or create a safety hazard.
Prohibited Materials and Methods
The following are strictly prohibited:
- Active cooling systems
- Refrigeration systems
- Peltier cooling devices
- Ice or frozen materials
- Water-based cooling
- External heat sinks
- External insulation added during testing
- Electrical heating elements incorporated into the specimen
- Batteries or powered devices
- Any chemical reaction intended to absorb heat
- Any mechanism designed to interfere with the testing equipment
Testing Rules
- All teams will be tested using the same testing setup.
- The organizer's measurement instruments will be considered the official measurement source.
- Participants are not permitted to modify the testing equipment.
- Participants cannot touch or modify the specimen once testing has started.
- Sensor positions will be standardized.
- The same heating condition will be applied to every team.
- Testing duration will be fixed by the organizers.
- If the specimen fails during testing, the result will be recorded as observed by the judges.
- The judges' recorded experimental data will be considered final.
Testing Procedure
- Preparation: Participants must bring only the prepared wall to the event. The wall must be fabricated by the participants themselves.
- Testing Setup: The wall will be placed inside a closed chamber. A thermal load will be applied to one side.
- Temperature Measurement: After 2 minutes for temperature stabilization, the temperature on both sides of the wall will be recorded. The data will be handed over to the participants immediately after testing.
Modification Rules
The following modifications are strictly prohibited after submission:
- No modification
- No additional material
- No cutting
- No coating
- No external insulation
- No replacement
Any modification after submission may result in disqualification.
Safety Rules
- Participants must follow all laboratory safety instructions.
- Direct contact with heated surfaces is prohibited.
- Participants must not touch the specimen immediately after testing if it remains hot.
- Flammable, explosive, toxic, or hazardous materials are not permitted.
- Any unsafe specimen will be rejected by the organizers.
Disqualification
A team may be disqualified for:
- Using prohibited materials
- Tampering with the testing setup
- Modifying the specimen after submission
- Unsafe practices
- Misconduct
- Plagiarism or copying another team's design
- Failure to follow instructions given by the organizers
Judging Authority
The decision of the event organizing committee shall be final.
The organizers reserve the right to:
- Modify the testing procedure if required for safety or technical reasons.
- Reject unsafe specimens.
- Modify the schedule.
- Clarify or amend rules before the start of the competition.
Any major change affecting scoring should be announced to all teams before testing begins.
Evaluation Criteria
The winner will be determined based on the highest temperature difference across the wall, as recorded by the organizers' official measurement instruments.
